15 historical plaques stolen from New Norfolk under police investigation

Police are investigating more than a dozen missing historical bronze plaques that could cost ratepayers $7000 to replace.

Vandals have allegedly targeted New Norfolk’s historic plaques with a total of 15 bronze plaques now missing from the town including the commemorative Queen’s Jubilee plaque which is missing for the second time.

A spokesman for Derwent Valley Council said on Tuesday night a number of plaques were stolen from Arthur Square and Pioneer Ave.

13 plaques were stolen from Pioneer Ave, 2 from the Early Settler Wall as well as the Queen’s Jubilee plaque.

“This is not only extremely disappointing for the community but also another impost on council resources to report, follow up, and replace,” the spokesman said.

They estimated it would cost $7000 to replace the plaques.

The council spokesman asked anyone living near the locations to check if their security cameras captured footage of the incident.

A Tasmania Police spokesman said the matter was referred to police on Wednesday and is being investigated.

“Anyone with information in relation to the matter is asked to contact New Norfolk Police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers Tasmania on 1800 333 000,” Police said.
