BUSHFIRE OFFICIALS are calling on motorists to dob in any ‘drop kicks’ they see tossing lit cigarettes from their cars as Sydney swelters through the first in a string of very hot days.

A total fire ban has been declared in the Greater Sydney, Greater Hunter, North Western and Northern Slopes regions, with the mercury already crashing through 36 in the west and 34 in the city.

Rural Fire Service Assistant Commissioner Rob Rogers took to Twitter this morning calling for help in catching offenders and pointing out the steep fine for breaking the law during a total fire ban.

“Any drop kick that drops a lit cigarette today in a total fire ban area can be fined $1,320,” he wrote.

The state has already seen a number of destructive bushfires in the past few weeks and the threat is rising with conditions to remain hot for at least the next five days.

While tomorrow will see a mini reprieve - with an expected top of 25 in the city and 29 in the west - the mercury will head up again on Sunday with temperatures predicted to be 28 and 34.

The return to work on Monday will be a sweaty one with the mercury hitting 31 in the city and 36 out west.

There’s a slight chance of a few showers over the weekend, with more rain expected to arrive over the city on Monday and Tuesday.

As temperatures began rising this morning, emergency services began issuing warnings about avoiding the midday sun and keeping an eye out for the vulnerable.

“It’s going to be a scorcher in some parts of NSW! Make sure you keep cool, drink plenty of water and avoid the midday sun,” Police tweeted this morning.

It was a warning echoed by Supt Alan Morrison of NSW Ambulance on morning television.

“Heat can kill, that’s why it’s so important to stay hydrated, stay out of the heat and look out for the elderly, young and pets,” he said.
