Stolen car rams Townsville woman on her way to church

A woman on her way to church has been subjected to a violent attack as a stolen car rammed her in Kirwan.

A Kirwan woman has been rammed off the road sideways by a driver in a stolen vehicle and pushed metres up a footpath before crashing into trees in a terrifying daylight attack.

The 48 year old woman was on her way to church at 9am when a blue Holden hatchback sped through a roundabout at the corner of Thuringowa and Greenwood Drive in Kirwan, hitting her car and spinning it sideways.

The terrifying ordeal continued to unfold as the woman’s car was pushed up a footpath, with the driver behind the wheel of the stolen hatchback not stopping until the car crashed into trees.

The woman was treated for shock at the scene.

Townsville Police District Duty Officer Senior Sergeant Scot Warrick said the entire ordeal was witnessed by a number of people.

“Witnesses have told police that an aboriginal male has run from the stolen hatch and this male has made no attempt to check on the welfare of the occupant of the other car,” he said.

“He was seen to get into a silver small SUV driven by a group of other males and sped from the scene.

“The alleged behaviour is certainly concerning and the community have the right to go about their business without fear of being a victim or being injured so we would ask anyone with information to come forward.”

Senior Sgt Warrick said it wasn’t clear if the escape car was also stolen but police had seized the blue hatchback and were carrying out forensic investigations.

“QPS are examining dashcam footage and confident that the identity will be known in the not too distant future,”

“Approximately an hour before the incident the hatchback was seen driving dangerously through red lights and on the incorrect side of the road but police were not in a position to safely intercept that vehicle.

“I am asking if any members of the public saw anything or may have dashcam footage then we would like to hear from them to help investigations because certainly in this case we’re very fortunate this lady did not sustain any serious injuries.”
