On a night like this! Kylie Minogue’s best fashion moments ahead of her 50th birthday

GOLD hotpants, double denim, mesh bras, sequined anything, and signature hairstyles which included perms and pixie cuts.

Kylie Minogue has sported some truly iconic looks over the years, and started more than a few trends.

The self-confessed “chameleon”, who turns 50 today, continues to turn heads for her age-defying dress sense on and off the stage.

Taking a step back in time, the Australian pop princess went from Neighbours’ girl next-door wearing overalls (as the character Charlene) to a sexy edge in the ’90s while dating rock star Michael Hutchence.

Kylie Minogue turns 50

Perhaps Minogue’s most famous outfits were those gold hotpants worn as only Kylie Minogue can ... while dancing on a bar, teamed with a Stella McCartney for Chloe halter-neck top, and a Charlie’s Angels-style hair flick, in the disco-inspired video for Spinning Around.

The cheeky, bum-baring briefs were later revealed to have cost the equivalent of 87 cents and were purchased from a London flea market.

She once said that the gold hot pants “got pretty worn away ... they worked very hard in that video”, speaking about them on The Graham Norton Show.

William Baker, her stylist since 1994, was credited with creating the “indie Kylie” look that was one of her most experimental to date.

Minogue made a case for a hooded jumpsuit in Can’t Get You Out Of My Head (cue “La la la/La la la la la”), designed by Fee Doran for Mrs Jones, and then took style inspiration from Las Vegas showgirls and Grecian goddesses.

While touring, Minogue has worn custom-made pieces by Dolce & Gabbana, Jean-Paul Gautier and John Galliano, acting as a muse to the designers.

“My style is eclectic, I’m such a chameleon,” Minogue previously told Elle magazine.

“It is a real pleasure to go around and wear different designers and styles,” she said.

Her sister Dannii Minogue said she and Kylie didn’t always give each other the best fashion advice growing up.

“She was into really tight, tight jeans,” Dannii Minogue told News Corp Australia in 2015.

“You know when girls used to do up jeans with a coathanger? Before there were GHDs, you’d iron your hair on an ironing board to get it straight.”

Fishnet stockings, sequined mini dresses (hello, Did It Again), over-the-knee boots and, of course, hotpants have been Kylie’s wardrobe staples.

“I get an extra kick if I wear an up and coming designer,” Minogue has said.

“It is a really nice feeling to know that it is helping get them out there.”

And that’s a style ethos she has continued, even recently, on the set of a Vogue Australia cover shoot celebrating her milestone birthday, which noted that Kylie wears local designer Alice McCall and Ralph & Russo (the UK-based design house run by two Australians).

She has even tried her hand as a designer, with a lingerie line, Love Kylie, a collection of glasses for Specsavers, and The Kylie Minogue at Home collection (which, as its name suggests, was her take on home decor).

Speaking about her concert style to Marie Claire, Minogue said even she was worried some of her outfits were “too much”.

“It’s incredible how a piece can shine on stage, when beforehand you’d look in the mirror and think, ‘OMG, it’s too much,’” Minogue told the magazine.

“If I’m going on a date, I will try and wear a mid-length slip dress and sharpen it with a jacket, something easy.

“I also love satin lace-up ankle boots with the toes out. But throughout the day, I’m so lazy!

“I’ll still wear jeans, trainers and a singlet or denim shirt with either a hat or a topknot.”

And while Kylie still looks very much like the girl next door — even at 50 — she is well and truly comfortable in her own skin ... and personal style.

“I’ve been more comfortable with myself, and I think that’s something that does come with age,” Minogue told Vogue Australia in April.

“I was just telling my friend [50] is a lot of years on planet Earth! But to be at this age and still have possibilities and having been through some ups and downs, you know, being unwell was the biggest.

“But I would like to think that I’ll just embrace life more, as much as possible. Yeah!”
