THE 5000 jobs in 50 days campaign by News Corp Australia, publisher of this website, has smashed its target in just four days but the call is still on to get more first-time workers into a job.
The campaign is aimed at tackling youth unemployment as more than a quarter of a million 15 to 24-year-olds are looking for work across the country, according to Australian Bureau of Statistics’ Labour Force data.
At the time of publication, 5214 first-time jobs had been pledged to the campaign from 37 employers, with roles ranging from dental assistants to trade apprentices to food and beverage attendants.

AUSTRALIA NOW A WORK-IN-OFFICE NATION
“It is astonishing that 37 employers can identify more than 5000 jobs for first-time job seekers. And in just four days,” said Michael Miller, Executive Chairman, News Corp Australasia.
“Imagine what we could achieve if all major employers — and small businesses — joined us to set our next generation on their way to productive careers.
“This is a moment, a real opportunity to challenge and change the national mindset and make a real difference for unemployed youth.”
More key employers are urged to get on board.
Cathy Doyle, chief people officer at McDonalds Australia, which was among the first employers supporting the campaign, said they were proud to offer many Aussies their first job.
“Young workers come with a really open mind and an energy and an attitude to learn,” she said.
“Employers, by spending a bit of time training or teaching, often end up with a really engaged employee that learns things the right way.
“They have a zest for life and can be very inspirational.”
