Tyrone Aron Rankine, charged after Munno Para roadside shooting, denied bail after firearm found in bedroom

Another man charged after gunshots were fired in a suburban street has faced court, which heard he had a sawn-off shotgun in his bedroom.

A double barrel sawn-off shotgun was allegedly found in the bedroom of a young man charged over a roadside shooting in Munno Para, a court has heard.

Tyrone Aron Rankine, 20, faced the Elizabeth Magistrates Court on Thursday charged with aggravated possession of a prescribed firearm without a licence.

The Smithfield Plains man was denied bail by Magistrate David White, in part because Mr Rankine was already on bail at the time.

Mr Rankine was the sixth man arrested after gunshots were fired at Munno Para last week.

Police were called after a fight between two groups of men on Stebonheath Road on July 14, with witnesses reporting shots fired.

Footage shows five or six people shoving and punching for around two minutes on the road before two groups leave. There is no suggestion Mr Rankine is one of the men.

Police later seized three firearms, including one thought to be used in the incident.

Counsel for Mr Rankine said the matter was contested.

He said Mr Rankine was a young Indigenous man who held two jobs, one as a landscaper and another in a family business that dealt with Aboriginal artwork.

The court heard he has no prior convictions and he would live with his mother, who would act as a guarantor.

They said if the matter went to trial, Mr Rankine could be in custody for years and end up serving a longer term behind bars than that imposed on the charges.

Prosecution “strongly opposed” all forms of bail, saying the alleged offence was committed whilst Mr Rankine was on bail imposed fewer than two weeks earlier.

Five other men had previously been arrested after the fight and shooting.

Last week, Tyler Jake Haywood, 21, and Andrew Paul McDonald, 44, appeared via video link in the Elizabeth Magistrates Court.

Mr Haywood, the alleged shooter, is yet to enter a plea to two counts of discharging a firearm to annoy, frighten or injure – namely a sawn-off shotgun.

Both men are yet to enter pleas to joint charges of aggravated affray and aggravated possessing a firearm without a licence.

Police arrested a third man on July 16, charging the 21-year-old Smithfield Plains man with numerous offences including possessing a firearm without a licence, affray and breach of bail.

The fourth man – a 23-year-old man from Munno Para West – was arrested last Saturday and the fifth – a 20-year-old man from Andrews Farm – on Monday.

Both men were charged with firearms offences, refused police bail and appeared in court.

Police said the men were known to each other.

On Thursday, Mr White refused bail, citing the gravity of the allegations and the fact Mr Rankine was already on bail at the time of the incident.
