An outpouring of support for the fiancee of the motocross star who died in a crash in Adelaide has seen more than $55,000 raised as she prepares to embark on a journey as a single mum.
Queensland rider Joel Evans died after a crash at a motocross event at Gillman on Sunday with his heartbroken fiancee revealing he was due to become a father in October.
Now, the community has answered a call to action to support the young family with a GoFundMe raising more than $57,000 in just hours.
“As most of you are aware, on Sunday April 27 we lost the life of our beloved Joely in a tragic accident doing what he loved,” the post on the crowd funding page says.
“Joel was living his dream, he had worked so hard for he was racing in Thailand and Australia and was about to take off on a month holiday with his fiance to Thailand and America to pursue his dream of racing an AMA national before returning home to start setting up for his little son.”
It followed Fiancee Michaela Hurt’s heartfelt post on Instagram just hours earlier: “Yesterday we lost the most incredible person on this earth. The most authentic, loved and kind hearted soul.
“He is such a loved partner, uncle, brother, friend and son but most proudly a father to our adored little boy who is joining us in October.”
The Go-Fund-Me post said Joel worked hard to support his little family.
“Michaela has a long journey ahead of her as she now prepares to embark on this journey as a single mum,” the post continued.
“As those closest to Joel know, his one wish was to ensure she was supported in every way possible.
“Any donation is kindly appreciated to support her and his beautiful son “Freddy” as they now take on these challenges alone.”
The couple became engaged in October 2024 after 11 years together.
Evans’ sister, Renae Ferris described the family’s heartbreak.
“What do you say when you have no words? Yesterday our lives changed forever,” she wrote on social media.
“Intuitively, I woke with a deeper calling for presence. My heart’s daily reminder was ‘Appreciate what you have, don’t wait until it’s gone’.
Emergency services were called to the Gillman Speedway about 3.20pm following a crash at a motorsport event.
Round three of the 2025 ProMX Championship at Gillman was abandoned due to his death on the track.
