A man has been charged after footage of an attack on a woman at a city bubble tea shop was posted to social media. The store has denied it was over a pay dispute.

Woman assaulted at Fun Tea Adelaide

A man has been arrested over the assault of a woman in a Gouger St bubble tea store.

Police will allege the 39-year-old man punched and kicked the 20-year-old victim on Friday night.

The woman was treated by paramedics and taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

The man, from Glen Osmond, was arrested on Tuesday evening. He has been charged with assault and will appear in Adelaide Magistrates Court on May 7.

The victim, a 22-year-old Rose Park woman, was treated by paramedics at the scene.

The incident was allegedly sparked by an argument about wage theft from a trainee worker but on Wednesday, the shop denied this.

It a statement on its front door, Fun Tea said the assault arose after a previous verbal argument a female employee had with a customer.

“The alleged assault was not connected to a complaint about the employee’s pay or rates of pay,” the statement said.

“The management and owners of Fun Tea deplore violence of any sort, and have zero tolerance for assaults or violence.”

They said the person arrested is not an employee.

Translators say the argument spoken in Mandarin, started when the woman in the video confronts a man, asking why she was not paid for work she undertook during a trial period.

The incident escalates when a second man, wearing a black shirt, intervenes and slaps the woman across the face.

As other people step in to defend the woman, she retaliates by throwing an item at the offender.

The male and female begin kicking each other and she is kicked to the ground.

When police arrived at the scene shortly after 9.30pm, the suspect had left.

The suspect is known to the victim, and police are investigating.

Anyone with information on the incident should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
