Young motorcycle rider killed following collision on Grand Junction Rd at Hope Valley

A motorcyclist and a car have collided in a fatal crash at Hope Valley on Sunday afternoon.

Distraught family and friends were confronted with devastating news on Sunday after a 22-year-old Houghton man died following a collision between his motorcycle and an SUV in the northeastern suburbs.

A man and woman, believed to the young man’s family, could be seen kneeling over the rider’s body on the ground.

The accident occurred along Grand Junction Rd at Hope Valley, just after 1.30pm on Sunday.

Emergency services attended but were unable to save the motorcyclist, who died at the scene.

Family and friends, believed to be of the motorcyclist, soon arrived on the scene and appeared to be visibly distressed by the situation, and were seen comforting and hugging each other.

The SUV driver, a 43-year-old Hope Valley man, was not injured in the crash.

The motorcyclist, was seen being treated by paramedics behind a yellow sheet on Sunday afternoon.

Witnesses at the scene reported hearing a loud bang, and MedStar teams, as well as ICU paramedics from the Special Operations Team are responding.

Major Crash investigators were also on the scene.

Ryan Stephens, who was working at the nearby Lost Paradise shop when the accident occurred, said he ran outside when he saw traffic banking up along Grand Junction Road.

“I just saw the motorbike down so I ran down there and found him on the ground,” he said.

“He wasn’t in a good way.”

He said there were several people trying to help the motorcyclist and keep him “as calm as possible”.

“He was in a bit of pain,” he said.

Shortly after emergency services and the rider’s mother arrived, Mr Stephens said.

“I unfortunately have the mum’s scream rattling through my head at the moment. That’s the worst thing,” he said.

The motorcyclist is the 64th person to die on South Australian roads this year.

Grand Junction Rd was closed in both directions between Awoonga Road and Valley Road on Sunday, with police advising motorists to avoid the area.
