The identity of an SA Police officer who has been charged with one count of abuse of public office can now be revealed.

It comes as Constable Kelly Calicchio, 29, from Adelaide’s western suburbs, was granted permission by the court to vary her bail agreement to allow her to go on an overseas trip.

Constable Calicchio appeared in the Port Adelaide Magistrates Court on Thursday.

Details of her alleged offence were not aired in court however Constable Calicchio’s lawyer did ask the court to vary her bail agreement so she could go on an overseas trip from May 5 to May 29 this year.

The police prosecutor did not oppose the variance and the court granted the change on the proviso that Constable Calicchio check into the Netley Police Station at least 48 hours before she departs for the trip and 48 hours after she returns.

Constable Calicchio was arrested and charged on January 9 this year by SA Police’s Anti-Corruption Section detectives, following a lengthy investigation.

An SA Police spokesperson said Constable Calicchio had been suspended from duties since her arrest.

“As the matter is before the courts, no further comment will be made,” she said.

In an unrelated case in December 2023, a Virginia woman was charged over conduct that allegedly abused the public office, while she was working with South Australian Police.

The 44-year-old was charged with three counts of abuse of public office.

Last year, The Advertiser revealed a new report that detailed criminal investigations into the conduct of SA Police officers have been hindered by fellow officers refusing to co-operate with the state’s anti-corruption commission.

Constable Calicchio is not charged in relation to that report.

Constable Calicchio declined to comment as she ran from waiting media outside the courthouse. She will next appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on April 16.
