SA Health has issued an alert after a three-year-old was diagnosed with the highly infectious disease measles.
It warns people may have been exposed to the child at multiple sites including a major shopping centre and hospital.
The child had recently travelled to Vietnam and had been in the following locations while infectious and people in these setting at the specified time may have been exposed:
People who have been in these locations during these times should monitor for symptoms and contact their GP if they develop symptoms.
Measles begins with fever, cough, runny nose and sore eyes followed by a blotchy rash which begins on the head then spreads down the body.
If measles is suspected, it is vital people phone the doctor or medical clinic before attending so precautions can be taken to avoid spreading the disease to others.
SA Health says immunisation provides the best protection against measles and it is vital people have two doses of the vaccine to protect themselves and the community.
They say people born in the late 1960s to mid-1980s may believe they are fully immunised but may have only received one measles vaccine and be at risk of the disease.
People born during or after 1966 and have not had two measles vaccines should visit their GP or local council immunisation clinic to obtain a vaccine.
Children receive their first measles vaccination at 12 months and a second one at either 18 months or four years.
This is the first measles case in SA this year. There were six cases reported last year.
