SA dad accused of meth trafficking in Bali shares past alcoholism, new marriage in TikTok video

He’s facing life behind bars in a Balinese prison – but just months ago, Troy Smith shared an emotional video thanking his new wife for saving him.

The South Australian father facing life imprisonment after being allegedly caught with methamphetamine in Bali hit “rock bottom” before meeting his new wife, social media videos have revealed, with the dad opening up about his past addiction.

In a video shared to TikTok in January this year, Troy Smith, 49, said his wife Tracy Ijusa Musiega – now Tracy Smith – 31, had “given him motivation to do everything” after he became estranged from his children.

Mr Smith is facing the maximum prison sentence of life if found guilty after his hotel room was raided by Balinese police while on holiday with Mrs Smith last week, where they allegedly discovered a package of “lubricant” that actually contained drugs.

Mrs Smith is not accused of any wrongdoing.

Police have alleged that 3.15g of meth was in a Colgate toothpaste container inside the package.

After moving from Port Lincoln to Cairns, in Queensland, in 2022, Mr Smith took to social media platform TikTok to document his new life, sharing videos documenting his hotel rooms, locals on the street and the weather differences between SA and the Sunshine State.

In an emotional video shared to the social media platform, Mr Smith said he “absolutely hit rock bottom” after suffering from chronic alcoholism.

“You couldn’t have drunk any more than me,” Mr Smith said.

“I didn’t see any way out and probably should be dead to be honest.

“That caused a lot of upset for me. Kids don’t speak to me anymore. That was the fallout from that and you just get so down you just trundle along in life.”

Mr Smith said he met his now-wife, who is from Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, “in the most bizarre circumstances” through Tinder while he was living in Cairns.

“I’ve since been to Bali, proposed to her, been to Nairobi and married her … and it’s amazing,” he said.

“You just think life’s done, you’ve had this one and nothing much is gonna happen, you just meander along and die a quiet death at, whatever, 75, achieve nothing, no motivation, nothing exciting in the later part of your life.
“But now I’m loving life … this girl, she gives me motivation to do everything.

“She’s my life now and I’m just so happy for the gods, however they lined our ducks up, thank you.”

Mr Smith’s TikTok bio reads: “It ain’t over, till it’s over.”

Mrs Smith was stoic as the attended Denpasar Police Station on Monday to visit her husband, who was due to face the media during a police press conference.

However, she struggled to fight back tears after police turned her away.

Bali Police’s Deputy Director of Narcotic Unit Ponco Indriyo said investigations were continuing into the case.
