A Rosewater couple want legal action to be taken against a fellow resident after their pet cat was caught for more than 24 hours in a jaw trap set in his backyard.
Cooper Salkic and Tamika Piercy told Nine News the neighbour refused to return the trapped animal, threatening to “execute” their cat, before it was eventually returned to the couple.
The residents have reported the incident to the RSPCA, police and the local council.
Mr Salkic said their pet cat Luna went missing on Saturday and they found her on Monday after hearing her cries of distress.
“I was calling out her name and that’s when I heard the cries of our cat,” Mr Salkic said.
“I got there, jumped the fence straight away pretty much, he (the resident) has come out, he then started taking photos of me because he’s probably thinking I’m trespassing.”
Ms Piercy said she then pleaded with the resident to return Luna.
“I asked him, I said ‘Please, can I have my cat back, all I want is my cat back, I don’t want anything else, I just want the cat back’” she said.
“And that’s when he said, ‘you’re not getting her back, she’s going to be executed’.”
The couple said they managed to get Luna back, however her leg had been injured and she would need to have part of it amputated.
“I was fuming, how can you do something to such an innocent animal,” Mr Salkic said.
“Now she’s at the vet, she has to get one of her toes amputated.”
No legal action has been taken to date.
The RSPCA said anyone found to have set up a steel jaw trap could face a maximum penalty of up to $2500.
