Port Lincoln man Troy Smith has left Indonesia after being busted with drugs and serving a rehabilitation stint.

The 49-year-old father-of-two was arrested while on holiday in Bali in April, after local police found 3.15g of methamphetamine in his hotel room.

Facing down a $740,000 fine, in July the court instead sentenced him to stay at an addiction treatment centre in the island’s capital of Denpasar.

On Thursday, Australian security expert John McLeod, who had been retained by Mr Smith as a ‘fixer’, released a statement saying he has “completed his rehabilitation program and has departed Indonesia”.

“He deeply regrets his poor decisions and offers sincere apologies to the Indonesian and Australian communities and his family, friends, and partner,” the statement read.

“We express sincere gratitude to the rehabilitation centre staff for their professionalism and compassionate care, and the Indonesian government for their humane support.

“We thank the Indonesian legal system for prioritising rehabilitation over incarceration, and recognising the value of genuine rehabilitation.

“Troy now embraces sobriety with humility and a fresh commitment to contributing positively to the broader community.”

Mr Smith was originally charged with drug trafficking, an offence that carries a penalty of life imprisonment, but prosecutors dropped those charges in June - citing his “politeness during trial” and importance to his family.

Police alleged that Mr Smith had smoked drugs from a glass pipe in his hotel room on April 29, with the father later telling Indonesian authorities that he had been using methamphetamine since 2020 to stave off an alcohol addiction.

A tip-off from the public led to his arrest the following day.

It is unclear whether Mr Smith is returning to Port Lincoln or elsewhere in Australia.
