A teenager has been fitted with an electronic monitoring device and released on bail after he allegedly tied a piece of wire across one of Adelaide’s busiest cycling routes – leaving four riders injured and their bikes “significantly destroyed”.

Levi Young-Henderson, 18, appeared in the Christies Beach Magistrates Court on Tuesday in front of Magistrate Kylie Schulz charged with two counts of act to cause serious harm and four counts of damage to property.

He is yet to enter any pleas but, at his last court appearance, said he “strongly contested” the allegations.

Ms Schulz noted the prosecution remained opposed to all forms of bail – but granted Mr Young-Henderson’s application due to their “circumstantial case”.

“It’s alleged that the applicant acted in a way that placed the community’s safety in considerable risk by placing wire across the Patrick Jonker Veloway which caused cyclists to fall from their bicycles,” she said.

“It caused injury to members of the public and had the potential to cause catastrophic injury which fortunately did not eventuate. It’s alleged the applicant caused property damage to the value of tens of thousands of dollars.

“However, it is a circumstantial case that is relied upon by the prosecution. He is only 18 years old, has no history as an adult and I understand this is his first time in custody.”

About 6.20am on Friday, January 10, three male cyclists reported to police wire had been strung across the bike path near the Poznan Path footbridge, along the Southern Expressway.

It’s alleged the hazardous wire had been removed from a fence and tied to a tree.

Mr Young-Henderson, of Noarlunga Downs, was arrested by Southern District Police last Wednesday night after a public appeal to identify the man was issued the day before.

Last week, a police prosecutor alleged that, after turning himself in to police, Mr Young-Henderson’s phone was seized and video was located displaying the path with the caption ‘I’m so evil’ and a devil emoji.

Defence counsel for Mr Young-Henderson told the court their client walked down the bike path every day for his job as a casual fencer and “filmed the video as a joke”.

Leaving the Adelaide Remand Centre just after 2pm after being fitted with an electronic monitoring device, Mr Young-Henderson was surrounded by family members and ushered to a waiting car.

However, before he could get to the car – which was waiting on the street with all doors open – he mistakenly tried to get in a car full of people not known to him.

“Wrong car, wrong car,” his family members told him.

After getting into the right car, the family quickly left.

Mr Young-Henderson wore a mask over his face, sunglasses and a bucket hat as he left the centre. He will face the Adelaide Magistrates Court in May.
