A man has been evacuated from a northeastern suburbs home after an “extremely intense” fire ripped through the property on Wednesday morning.
Firefighters rushed to the Vista Ave home at Valley View about 3.20am to reports a fire was burning inside the home.
The Advertiser understands two people lived in the home – a man in his early 70s and his son who in his 40s.
An MFS spokesperson said 24 firefighters from five appliances and a command vehicle arrived to find the front room of the house fully ablaze, with flames spreading rapidly through the house to neighbouring properties.
“Firefighters using a rapid internal attack were able to contain the fire to the region of the property,” the spokesperson said.
“With the use of multiple high pressure lines and breathing apparatus, they were able to gain control of the fire and extinguish it within 20 minutes.”
Damage to the property is estimated to be $200,000.
Fire crews saved a man sheltering in the backyard of the property. Police said he was uninjured though he was treated in hospital for smoke inhalation.
Manjeet Singh, who was about to move into the neighbouring home with his family, will now have to delay the move because of the minor damage.
Mr Singh said he learned about the fire after a friend called their family.
“I just jumped in quickly and took my car and came here straight away,” he said.
“When I came here I saw the blaze going on and the fire brigades, ambulance, police were here, and I was a bit shocked.
“I was concerned my house was also going to catch on fire.”
Mr Singh said the damage to his new home was minimal and they would move in a few weeks after some cosmetic repairs.
Another neighbour, who asked to remain anonymous, told The Advertiser she was relieved to hear the residents of the burned home weren’t seriously injured.
“Ever since we moved into this house five years ago, we’ve been very friendly with the neighbours across from us,” she said.
“I feel terrible for the dad, I think this is his only home and he wanted to pass it on to his children, but now it’s absolutely gutted.”
MFS commander Stuart Dawes told Channel Seven’s Sunrise quick work from firefighters saved neighbouring properties.
“The blaze was extremely intense, we arrived quickly from the time of call and our firefighters noticed heavy smoke filling up the street and we had a lot of flame activity coming through the front window and impacting through the roof,” he said.
He said while the fire was spreading rapidly throughout the house and impacting on the neighbouring properties, firefighters were able to contain the blaze to prevent damage to other homes.
Fire investigators at the scene said the cause of the fire remains undetermined, but police are still investigating.
