The hospitality entrepreneur behind Brighton cafe CREAM and city restaurant Remy’s Deep Dish Pizza has abruptly shut down his businesses.

Josh Rivers made the shock announcement on Tuesday night, revealing he was left with little choice but to close his quartet of venues, including bagel and oat bar Girl Next Door, and Diamond Burger, both at the same location on Jetty Road, Brighton.

“It is with a very heavy heart that I announce the end of my company including all restaurants... all four sites are closed effective immediately,” he wrote on social media.

“I would have love to have one last hurrah but unfortunately that’s now how these things go.”

Mr Rivers said his company wasn’t another casualty of the state’s hospitality crisis.

Mr Rivers, a 22-year veteran of the hospitality industry, said he was at peace with the decision and urged his followers not to “feel sorry for him”.

“This is business, and business is full of risks,” he wrote.

“And besides, my second son was born two days ago so while this is extremely painful I am experiencing the ultimate high on the flip side. Mumma and baby are both doing great.”

Earlier this year, Mr Rivers changed his business model and moved his successful Diamond Burger shop into CREAM on Jetty Rd, to cut down on costs.

He added Girl Next Door into the same site earlier this month, and closed his Jetty Road doughnut shop, Landough’s.

Mr Rivers launched CREAM – an acronym for Coffee Rules Everything Around Me – in 2015, focusing on quality coffee and an American-style brunch menu.

He expanded and renovated the space about four years later, and in 2021, opened Remy’s just off Rundle Mall.

“When CREAM opened it was pretty much an overnight success,” Mr Rivers said.

“To the 300 odd staff that have worked for me; thank you. I will ALWAYS be an advocate for how special staff are to a venue. Without all of your input, no matter how small it may have been, I couldn’t have done this without you.

“To the hundreds of thousands of customers who have eaten my wild creations and drunk millions of litres of my coffee, thank you so much for your patronage and ongoing support.”
