Off duty nurse breaks through glass and pulls driver from truck rollover at base of South Eastern Freeway

A truck driver has escaped serious injury after rolling a single container truck at the base of the South Eastern Freeway on Wednesday, with an off-duty nurse rushing to help.

An off-duty nurse has sprung into action, pulling a truck driver from a wreckage at the bottom of the South Eastern Freeway on Wednesday afternoon.

The single container truck rolled over and took out traffic lights, causing traffic delays, with witnesses accounts saying it was going “too fast” when it turned the corner.

The incident occurred just after 6:30pm on Wednesday, with police and emergency services called to the corner of Glen Osmond Rd and Portrush Rd.

Off-duty nurse Rhiannon Bou witnessed the crash from a public transport bus and quickly sprung into action, asking the bus driver to stop before she ran to the crash to help, cutting her hand in the process.

“He was trying to get out of the cabin, so I ripped open the glass, ” Ms Bou said.

“He was in shock.”

Police said the driver, a 23-year-old man from the southern suburbs, did not sustain any injuries in the crash.

He was seen on his feet speaking to police and receiving a blood and alcohol test following the crash.

When asked about the incident, the driver told The Advertiser that “it was a bad time”.

A police spokesman described the circumstances of the crash, with no other vehicles involved.

“The collision occurred after the truck had been waiting at the red light and then commenced turning right with a green light onto Portrush Rd,” the spokesman said.

A witness said he heard the crash from ”800 metres” away.

Investigations into the crash are ongoing.
