A father who was “good with technology” planted AirTags in the car of an ex, accessed cameras in an ex’s home, mailed nude images of another ex to her own family and created a fake profile on a lesbian dating site of another, police say.

Father of two Darren Wayne Armitage is standing trial in the Adelaide Magistrates Court for multiple counts of stalking after several victims told police he had harassed and unlawfully surveilled them on multiple occasions.

Mr Armitage has been charged with six counts of using an optical surveillance device without consent, ten counts of aggravated stalking, two counts of knowingly distribute an invasive image, one count of basic stalking and one count of installing a tracking device on a vehicle without consent. He has denied any wrongdoing.

In court on Monday morning, a police prosecutor told Magistrate Ben Sale that Mr Armitage had created false accounts on social media in order to add an ex girlfriend, as well as her new partner. The court heard the alleged offences occurred after Mr Armitage would date the women, and after they broke up, would continue to stalk them through the use of different technology.

The prosecutor said three Apple AirTags had been found in one woman’s car, with Mr Armitage then looking up “why is my AirTag not working” when they were removed from the vehicle by police.

He said Mr Armitage had also found nude images and explicit messages on one woman’s phone, screenshotted them without her consent and then printed them off, highlighted parts of them to then post them to her brother in the mail.

“So they haven’t just been accidentally added to something, someone has taken the time to even mark up the copies?” Mr Sale asked.

“Yes,” the police prosecutor said.

According to court documents, the alleged offending occurred across multiple locations including Port Noarlunga, Prospect, Adelaide, Mile End, Morphett Vale and Seaford, and took place between October 2021 and January this year.

Earlier this year, Mr Armitage, who remains in custody, had applied for release on bail in the Supreme Court, with that court hearing he had been stalking a former partner and their teenage daughter by driving behind them, as well as phone calling outside of the hours that were agreed upon by family court.

The court heard the woman noticed the vehicle, which then slowed to a stop prior to reversing at them in an “aggressive” manner before blocking the road.

Mr Armitage was allegedly identified as the driver of the vehicle by his former partner, who remained stopped for a time before she was able to manoeuvre past.

It is alleged later that evening, Mr Armitage attended the woman’s home and left a card.

The trial continues.
