‘Changed the show forever’: Laura ‘Loz’ O’Callaghan wins national radio award

Adelaide brekky radio star Laura “Loz” O’Callaghan, of Triple M’s Roo, Ditts & Loz fame, has nabbed an award for best new on-air talent in the metropolitan market at the Australian Commercial Radio Awards.

Other winners in the national awards included The Ali Clarke Breakfast Show, which won best community campaign for a metropolitan station for its campaign: ‘Mel Dzelde Rescue: The Spirit of Christmas’.

Triple M gave a shout out to O’Callaghan’s win on social media, saying she “changed the show forever”.

“Laura O’Callaghan is one of the most humble and talented people in radio and now she has the award to prove it. A massive congratulations to Loz who won best new talent on-air at the Australian Commercial Radio Awards,” the post read.

O’Callaghan has been part of the Roo, Ditts & Loz show since 2021 and after winning the award over the weekend she spoke to Radio Today.

“I don’t know whether the word ‘new’ applies, I mean I’ve been working for a long time in the industry, but I have been on air for two years in commercial radio,” O’Callaghan said, adding, jokingly: “They found me in the doldrums, in the gutter, they plucked me out and said ‘do you want to talk about farts or a living?’ and I said ‘yes, yes please’.”

On radio on Monday, O’Callaghan said she “was in complete shock” at her win.

Her friends and family recorded messages of support, which were played live on-air.

“Thank you guys, you made me the freak I am,” O’Callaghan said.

The 32-year-old began volunteering in radio in 2016 at Fresh 927, where she ended up co-hosting breakfast with Mark “Thomo” Thomas.
