A Snapchat drug dealer told a psychologist he was on autopilot and had become “an idiot” at the time of his illegal side hustle.
Jakob Julian Meyer, 23, had been selling cocaine, MDMA and ketamine but managed to avoid jail after he turned his “out-of-control” life around.
During sentencing, the District Court heard an undercover police officer organised the purchase of 20 ecstasy pills from Meyer through Snapchat in May 2023.
On multiple other occasions the undercover officer purchased small amounts of cocaine from him.
On July 5, 2023 police searched a Seacliff Park address where Meyer was present.
They located a fireproof safe in the shed, which contained 9g of cocaine, valued at up to $4500 and 70.6g of MDMA, valued at up to $17,690.
Police also found $10,200, digital scales, pill punches and several plastic resealable bags.
They seized Meyer’s mobile phone.
“Analysis of the phone revealed multiple Snapchat messages exchanged in the days prior to the search, which led to an inference that you were trafficking in MDMA, cocaine and ketamine,” Judge Jo-Anne Deuter said.
Meyer pleaded guilty to seven counts of drug trafficking and one count of money laundering.
The court heard Meyer told a psychologist he was on autopilot at the time of the offending as he was heavily abusing cocaine and had become “an idiot”.
“You described your life as being out of control; revolving around drinking alcohol, doing cocaine and selling drugs,” Judge Deuter said.
The court heard Meyer, who works as a landscaping apprentice, had been undertaking rehabilitation programs since his arrest.
Meyer was sentenced to four years’ jail, with a non-parole period of two years and two months.
“The sale of illicit drugs is a significant problem in the community and has potential to cause problems for those who use them, as you are now fully aware,” Judge Deuter said.
“We do see the misery of drug dealing every day in this court and the results of it.”
However due to Meyer’s positive steps towards rehabilitation and lack of prior offending, the sentence was suspended on a $1000, three-year good behaviour bond.
“I hope it (Meyer’s rehabilitation) continues and that you can move forward from this and continue your good work, and live a lifestyle without any drugs,” Judge Deuter said.
“We don’t want to see you back here again.”
