MC Hammer-style harem pants that even Elle Macpherson struggled to make look good, structured shoulders and high-waisted jeans have driven a wedge between the sexes.

"Like men, women frame their choice of dress based on internal and external factors," said Assia Benmedjdoub, editor of online fashion website Ragtrader.

'"There have been a number of recent womenswear trends which left some men really scratching their heads, from extreme shoulders and harem pants to the rise of neon brights and voluminous shapes for the upcoming season."

"Such trends will be deliberately toned down in coming seasons to appeal a lot more to the taste of men."

 Ellidy Vlug, 19, of Narrabeen, said many of her friends dressed to keep up with trends and not to attract male attention.

"Although it is in the back of my mind that guys don't like some trends," she said.
