A CONVICTED rapist was able to remove his electronic ankle bracelet and go on the run for two days before police arrested him yesterday.
Daniel McQuilton, 27, was sentenced to five years and three months jail for sexually assaulting a young woman as she walked from a dance class to her car in Albury in 2008.
On Wednesday afternoon Corrective Service officials were alerted by a tamper alarm in McQuilton’s anklet that he was taking off the device while he was at Oxford Square in Darlinghurst, where the bracelet was later found by officials.
McQuilton was ordered to wear the device when he was released from prison just three months ago after being classified a “high-risk sex offender”.
Victorian police arrested him about 5am yesterday morning at Wodonga.
“In January this year, the Supreme Court ordered the man be placed on an Electronic Service Order for a period of two years and six months after the expiry of his maximum sentence for sexual assault,’’ a Corrective Services spokesman said yesterday.
“Corrective Services NSW inquiries confirmed the man had allegedly breached two conditions of his ESO.
“That is he must not deviate from a schedule approved in advance by Corrective Services NSW, and he must not remove his tracking equipment.
“CSNSW informed the NSW Police Force shortly after 5pm and lodged an ESO breach.’’
