A Brisbane bus driver’s decision to wear a MAGA cap as part of ongoing union protests has ignited a war of words over the action.
As more than 200 union members chose to forgo their uniforms as part of ongoing industrial action, a photo of a Brisbane bus driver wearing a red “Make America Great Again” cap has been shared to social media.
That sparked commenters to question whether it was appropriate to wear “politically associated clothing” while on the job.
“While they are driving, they are representing BCC. They would have a dress code that would ban them from wearing politically associated clothing. Definitely report him,” one commenter said.
It came as council union members on January 30 undertook 30 days of protected industrial action and put a “ban” on wearing bus driver uniforms, or have been wearing non-uniform accessories.
Brisbane City Civic cabinet chair for Transport Ryan Murphy said some unionised bus drivers were not wearing uniforms to work as part of protected industrial action.
The MAGA cap controversy sparked readers into fierce debate, with many backing the protest.
Others, though, slammed the driver’s action, while some said it remain a non-issue.
In an online poll more than half of all readers said they would still catch the bus despite the driver’s hat, while about 24 per cent claimed they “don’t care”.

Not a problem

Better he wear a hat with a very positive message such as Make America Great again, the one of the tens of thousands in NZ a few years ago with Make Ardern Go Away. They worked, so good luck making America Great again.
Amanda
Good on him – supporting his union and taking protected action. They deserve a fair pay increase and back pay. The Lord Mayor and Councillors gave themselves 4% and back pay but want workers to accept far less.
Ronald
Most idiots here wear em facing backwards. So no big deal. do what U want. young society is so screwed up

The last I checked this was still Australia. Who really give a rats what hat the bus driver is wearing. Has I recognised it I probably would have walked away but really, what relevance does it have hear. There are far worse T-shirt logos out there.
Give me a break

If this hat is not appropriate then neither is any Politician wearing a hard hat or high viz vest when being interviewed and not on an industrial site
Henry Root
I do seek unbiased global political commentary from my bus driver for my 50c fare!
James
The hat is really a non issue. Silly union demands, that’s another story.
Peter
Who cares? More important that he’s a good driver.
Zee
If he ws American no problem. If Australian big problem.
Love it
Keven
I’d shake his hand
Robert
MAGA – “Make Albanese Go Away” and we will “Make Australia Great Again”.
Bryan
Great hat. MAKE AUSTRALIA GREAT AGAIN.
Darren
What’s the issue with wearing a MAGA hat?
Shouldn’t happen
Eaton
People need to stop being activist and start being employees at all levels.
Adrian
Just tell him, and others, that such clothing is not appropriate for his work. And maybe give all drivers an optional, cap or hat to wear as part of the uniform.
martin
Yet to see a sane person wearing one. I’ll walk.
paul
It is time to stop your useless woke protests. It’s just an American hat.
