There could be rain on South East Queensland’s Anzac Day parades, with the weather bureau forecasting Thursday and Friday to cop the brunt of this week’s wet weather.

The Bureau of Meteorology tipped a coastal trough moving up from New South Wales would likely slow down around Southeast Queensland, and bring moderate rainfall and possible storms across the coast and inland.

The bureau has forecast a 95 per cent chance for rain in Brisbane today with falls of up to 40mm and an afternoon thunderstorm possible.

The bureau’s Felim Hannify said the wet weather conditions would kick off around Thursday afternoon.

“It certainly looks like we have seen the best weather already for the week. It is expected to deteriorate on Thursday,” the meteorologist said.

“There are widespread showers really kicking in on Thursday afternoon and could see some local falls of 50 to 100mm around the border ranges and the Gold Coast hinterland. You certainly couldn’t rule out the risk of some storm activity, particularly around the area.

“It will go towards inland parts so it go towards Darling Downs and Granite Belt, and in Toowoomba we have the chance of storms as well.

“It will definitely turn into a wetter afternoon and evening also around Brisbane.”

Mr Hannify said Anzac Day was also expected to be gloomy, with moderate rainfall.

“During the first part of Friday, we are going to probably have quite wet conditions around parts of the Southeast, particularly the coastal parts. That will include the Sunshine Coast, and especially Brisbane and the Gold Coast,” he said.

“The chance of storms on Thursday will be for the inland parts of the Southeast, but on Friday, the risk will very much be for more coastal Southeast.

“Around the Gold Coast, where you could see these localised falls getting around that 50 to 100mm. And broadly around the southeast, you are looking at a widespread 10 to 30mm during Thursday with the focus very much Brisbane south.

“Then into Friday it really depends on how the weather system evolves, but Brisbane and Gold Coast could certainly see some falls of 20 to 50mm during the morning.”
