A man whose roof flew off in the middle of the night on top of a power line says he slept through the whole ordeal.
Daniel Goullet was sleeping in his Redcliffe home that he has been in for five years when the roof tore apart and ended up in the middle of the street on a power line.
Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred hammered the southeast with category 1 winds and torrential rainfall after a drawn out crossing when it reached the mainland about 9pm last night.
“It’s pretty crazy, you could hear the front awning banging and all the water was coming through,” he said.
“We were asleep when the roof came off. I had no idea, the wind was so loud so we didn’t notice the roof came up.”
Residents in the city of Moreton Bay, home to half a million people, were issued a severe weather alert around 8.45pm asking them to stay indoors.
“Dangerous winds are impacting parts of City of Moreton Bay now, especially around Redcliffe Peninsula. People should move or stay indoors now to be safe,” the alert read.
Redcliffe recorded wind gusts of more than 100km/h overnight.
Mr Goullet said half of his stuff had been destroyed.
“We have been moving everything trying to get everything out of the leak and pack everything in the car,” he said.
In the meantime he will be staying at his uncle’s place as it isn’t safe to live at.
“I’m just in shock. This is crazy. You see this stuff on the news but you never think it’s going to happen to you,” he said.
“I had my doubts because it’s the oldest house on the Peninsula, I thought if anything’s going to happen it’s going to happen to this house.”
A house in Brighton also had its roof ripped off around 6pm last night.
Neighbours told The Courier-Mail the woman living in the house was able to escape ten minutes beforehand.
