Dashcam footage has captured the nail-biting moment a car was inches away from colliding with a police vehicle on the Gold Coast.
At around 6.30am on Thursday a police van turned into an intersection just outside Harbour Town Shopping Centre, when a white vehicle flew past.
The video captured the near-collision, with the police van stopping just in time for the other vehicle to seemingly narrowly miss it.
The Queensland Police Service later said the footage showed the van “appearing to collide with a Jeep”.
After the accident, the police van stopped in the middle of the intersection while the other car continued to drive further down the road.
The owner of the dashcam footage posted the snippet to the Gold Coast Crime Facebook page.
Viewers were quick to notice the green traffic light, indicating the white vehicle was allowed to drive through.
“What wtf was that police officer thinking?!” one person commented.
“No lights and sirens unlikely the oncoming traffic seen them,” another said.
“Rd rules, you MUST always give way to your right. No sirens so police car in the wrong!” a third wrote.
However, others noted the oncoming car did not appear to stop following the incident.
“That white SUV didn’t stop to get the details,” one person said.
A Queensland Police Service spokesperson confirmed QPS was investigating.
“The Queensland Police Service (QPS) is aware of a traffic incident involving a marked police vehicle and another vehicle that occurred earlier today, September 19 at Oxley Drive and Harbourside Court, Biggera Waters,” the spokesperson said.
“The incident, which was captured on dashcam, shows a police vehicle travelling through an intersection and appearing to collide with a Jeep.
“There were no injuries reported as a result of this incident.
“The QPS acknowledges the seriousness of this incident and has commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the traffic incident.
“Road safety remains a priority for Gold Coast Police. We are committed to ensuring all road users, including police, adhere to road rules to maintain public safety.”
