A highway west of Brisbane has reopened earlier than expected, after a truck hauling a wind turbine struck an overpass on Friday.
Westbound lanes of the Warrego Highway at North Tivoli in Ipswich reopened about 6.15pm on Sunday, the Department of Transport and Main Roads said.
They were originally expected to reopen on Monday morning.
TMR said the overpass would remain closed until the end of the week as structural assessments and repairs to the bridge were completed.
“Works are continuing to safely re-open part of the overpass to traffic as soon as possible, which may involve speed and load restrictions being put in place, pending the results of the structural assessment,” it said in a statement.
Police said on Friday it appeared the truck had failed to follow the pilot and escorting vehicles on to the Mt Crosby Rd off-ramp from the highway.
The driver of the truck, a man in his 50s, was taken to Ipswich Hospital for assessment.
