The Palaszczuk government will seek billions of dollars in new funding from the Morrison government for a slew of projects ahead of this week’s federal Budget.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has called on the Commonwealth to borrow to build, insisting the state deserves a fair share of funding as she unveils a Budget wish list.

“The Prime Minister has spoken publicly about borrowing to build,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

“That’s what we’re doing at a state level and that’s what we want to see in Tuesday’s federal Budget – more federal funding for Queensland projects.”

The state wants the federal government to forgive $263.1m in historical housing related debt to free up more money to pay for new social and affordable housing.

They have also called for ongoing targeted support following the expiry of JobKeeper, $1bn over 10 years to address overcrowding in remote Indigenous housing and hundreds of millions of dollars for major road projects.

Treasurer Cameron Dick pointed to Queensland’s growing population, which he said was good for the state because it was a driver for jobs and economic growth.

“But we need to be able to accommodate these new Queenslanders, and give them the access to housing, health and education that all Queenslanders deserve,” he said.

“I’m particularly concerned about a group that is the fastest growing cohort in Australia of people at risk of homelessness – single women who don’t own their own homes

“We know that over time, the Federal Government needs to boost the superannuation holding of women in particular, but right now there’s an urgent need to help women approaching retirement.”
