Olympic swimmer Shayna Jack has broken down in tears after discovering she had been bestowed one of the country’s highest accolades.
Jack, who is currently in South Africa filming ‘I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here!’, was delivered the news from fellow celebrity camp mate Nick Buckley that she had been honoured with the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM).
A tearful Shayna promised “they were tears of happiness” after she was celebrated by her fellow camp members.
“I just never thought I would get to a point where I get such a honourable award and in lots of circumstances in my life we may get to the highest triumphs and you are taught to put them aside to get ready for the next race or the next competition,” she said.
“This is probably the first time that I’ve received something and felt immediate joy and celebration.”
The camp ended celebrations by cheering “Aussie, Aussie, Aussie”.
Jacks honour comes after an incredible comeback where the athlete endured a doping scandal at just 20-years-old and returned to the Olympics in Paris after years of trying to clear her name.
She won two gold medals at the Paris Games.
Jack is among several Paris Olympians who were honoured with the Medal of the Order of Australia with the likes of Arisa Trew, Cam McEvoy and Alexa Leary also awarded.
