Sharyn Ghidella sacked from Channel 7 in 2024: What has happened since?

She was a favourite on our TV screens but this presenter has endured it all in the past 12 months.

It wasn’t meant to end like this.

After nearly 20 years at Channel 7, presenter Sharyn Ghidella got the news that shook her life … and the lives of her viewers.

Ghidella told staff at the network that she was leaving effective immediately in July 2024 and that her exit “is not quite how I expected it to end”.

Now, 12 months on, this is the twists and turns in Ghidella’s life since >>>

Lead-up to dramatic call

There had long been speculation, with some regular faces disappearing from Channel 7 in early 2024.

Over the coming months there were more changes in front of and behind the cameras.

On June 24, 2024 it was revealed a “massacre” within the senior executive ranks of Channel 7 shocked industry watchers, who said it’s a sign of just how serious the crisis was at the network.

Australia’s three commercial networks had battled against an unstoppable tide of declining viewership numbers and dwindling advertising revenue for the better part of two decades.

Born and raised in North Queensland, Ghidella sadly joined the exit queue during this period of transition.

Time to say goodbye

The mother-of-two in July 2024 launched an extraordinary social media attack on her employer, just hours after she was sacked by the TV network.

Ghidella, who read the 6pm Brisbane weekday news bulletins alongside Max Futcher, said she had been “sitting at the hairdressers for work” when she received a shock phone call telling her “my time was up.”

In a social media post, Ghidella also lashed job cuts at the network and across the commercial TV industry, including at Seven and Nine, and said: “The past couple of weeks in TV has, sadly, been a miserable affair.”

Tributes from colleagues

Max Futcher in July 2024 delivered a heartfelt farewell to his Seven News co-host.

Futcher opened Friday’s 6pm bulletin, which he hosted alone, with a moving tribute to Ghidella.

“First tonight, she didn’t want a farewell, and she’s too humble to want us to make a fuss. But we would like to thank Sharyn Ghidella for her 17 wonderful years behind the desk here at 7News Brisbane,” he said.

“A true professional, an accomplished journalist, and for all of us here – a friend and mentor. And my good mate.

“We know Sharyn has also been a big part of your lives, and we know she sees that role as a great privilege.

“Sharyn leaves with our respect, our admiration, and wishes for an amazing future.

“Love you Shaz.”

Big switch back to ‘home’

Just weeks after her sacking Ghidella in August 2024 joined 10 News First Queensland, while also filling in as a co-host on The Project.

“Returning to 10 News First feels like coming home. Network 10 provided me my first opportunity to work in a metropolitan newsroom and I have nothing but fond memories of my time there in the early 90s,” Ghidella, then 57, said at the time.

“10 News First has long been committed to keeping its audience informed about the issues and events that matter to them, both at home and overseas, and I can’t wait to join this dedicated and highly professional team in the Queensland newsroom.”

Martin White, head of Broadcast News, Paramount Australia and New Zealand, welcomed Ghidella back to Ten in a post on LinkedIn.
