The Bureau of Meteorology has cancelled a severe weather warning for southeast Queensland despite the Gold Coast, Logan and the Scenic Rim being lashed with thunder, lightning and rain.

At 5:26pm, the severe thunderstorm warning was cancelled across southeast Queensland.

The weather bureau said isolated thunderstorms will continue along and ahead of a surface trough that has moved over the NSW border and into southeast parts of the state.

Storms were moving slowly to the north and may continue into the early evening, but were no longer severe.

The situation will continue to be monitored and further warnings will be issued if necessary.

A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for parts of southeast Queensland with large hail, heavy rainfall and damaging winds predicted earlier in the afternoon.

But the systems weakened faster than expected.

It comes as Queensland experienced severe thunderstorms and hail last week, with parts of the Gold Coast region and northern Brisbane inundated.

Morayfield and Burpengary were smashed by a freak hail event, forcing retail stores and sporting clubs to close due to damage and over 7000 Energex customers to go without power.

Southeast Queensland could be in line for more severe weather, with the Bureau issuing a severe thunderstorm warning on Saturday afternoon.

Residents in the Scenic Rim and Gold Coast council areas were warned damaging winds, large hailstones and heavy rainfall could arrive in the next several hours.
