Shocking moment man jumps in front of train

Shocking video shows Queensland commuters gambling their lives to catch a train, with footage showing multiple people sprinting in front of the locomotives.

A series of clips released by Queensland Rail shows men running in front of trains to get to the correct platform, others crossing the tracks to hand something to a fellow commuter, and a group of young people making a bold move to save a skateboard.

The footage has been released as part of a new campaign to stop people trespassing on the tracks as data reveals the number of trespass incidents has risen since last year.

According to the rail service, there were 2913 incidents in the last financial year, with nearly 200 of those involving near misses with trains.

CCTV from Altandi on September 27 shows a man jump down on to the tracks as a train approaches opposite him.

The man sprints across the two lines and swings himself back onto the platform mere seconds before the train arrives.

In a second video from cameras at Alderley Station on August 26, a man is seen running down the platform in a bid to overtake the train pulling in on the platform opposite.

Before the train stops, the man jumps on to the tracks and runs across – again coming within centimetres of the still-moving locomotive.

Footage from the second platform shows the man then calmly open the door and board the train.

In a third, undated piece of footage, a person can be seen running in front of a moving train, with no clear reason for the dangerous act.

Queensland Rail senior manager security and emergency preparedness, Drew Brock, said the rising number of trespass incidents was “extremely concerning”.

“Our message is clear: Stay off the tracks! Trespassing is not worth risking your life,” he said.

Mr Brock pointed out the person taking the risk was not the only one who would be affected if things went wrong.

“This nailbiting vision shows near misses with trains, which is distressing for our drivers and has a lasting impact on them,” he said. “It’s not worth risking your life to make that approaching train, please just wait for the next one.

“The CCTV also shows people crossing the tracks ‘for fun’ or to even pick up an item.

“There are other instances where a bike and skateboard pass over the yellow line when a train is approaching.

“The vision makes it clear how easily this can all go wrong, so we ask that everyone to stay behind the yellow line until your train has stopped, for everybody’s safety.”

Trains on the network can travel up to 160km an hour, and can take up to 2km to come to a stop, with the nature of the tracks making it impossible to swerve away should something appear suddenly in front of them.
