Brisbane Lions star caught in ‘Coldplay moment’ at the Gabba
Brisbane Lions kicking back at the Gabba have been busted on camera clearly enjoying the off-season - much to the amusement of commentators. THINGS YOU MAY HAVE MISSED
Beers in hand and guernseys at home, Brisbane Lions players celebrating a night out at the Gabba have had their own “Coldplay moment” on live television.
Channel 7 cameras spotted stars Cam Rayner, Logan Morris, Sam Draper, Oscar Allen and Eric Hipwood clearing enjoying the off-season – weeks after premiership spoils.
Commentator Ricky Ponting pointed out several empty cups in new recruit Draper’s hands.
The boys’ phones appeared to blow up as their faces flashed across the big screen.
“Hopefully he’s picking his cups up for his mates, because he’s got half a dozen in his hands there,” Ponting said on air.

“Have a look. Just making an impression at a new club?”
“I reckon the phone’s blowing up, Punter,” fellow commentator Alister Nicholson said.
“Chris Fagan just popped up, I think.”
“Oh no, boys, the coach is onto us,” Aaron Finch said.
“Bit like a Coldplay concert, to me,” finished Ponting.
SMITH STITCHED UP
Steve Smith, one of cricket’s all-time greats, is so finicky at the crease he can be distracted by his own shadow.
But even the stand in skipper was forgiven for pausing play last night to allow for a mulleted social media star with beer in hand to take his seat.
Brisbane comedian Aaron Gocs - who has thousands of followers on social media - emerged in Smith’s eyeline forcing the Aussie batsman to back away.
Soon after, a second mullet man carrying beers further interrupted play, with English press reporting it as “Aussies causing mayhem”.
As we bring you all the news you may have missed from the Gabba, many saw the humour in the incident calling it a “classic stitch up” from Gocsy.
“Bit hard to pin that bloke, he’s just gone to get a beer,” Fox Sports commentator Mark Howard called.
“That’s a bit rough. He’s not causing any problems.
“Not his first rodeo either,” Kerry O’Keeffe chimed in.
“And not his last trip to the bar either, Skull” continued Howard.
“Good hair though. He’s loving his day at the cricket.”
Social media was abuzz with tributes to the Aussie icon.
“That’s Gocsy. Absolute legend and Australian thoroughbred. Inspirational,” Gibbo said on X.
“@MichaelVaughan that fella in the aussie shirt is an Australian comedian Aaron “Gocsy” Gocs,” Matt wrote.
“Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Nah, it’s just Gocsy,” Sportsbet posted on its channels.
STOKES SLEDGES OWN TEAMMATE
First England captain Ben Stokes called his home country miserable, now even teammates aren’t spared his sledging.
It can be revealed the all-rounder jokingly called Harry Brook early in his career “a bit dumb” – a label that looked spot on following the batter’s sorry dismissal in the second Test.
“I wasn’t very good at school, but my cricket brain is all right,” Brook responded, according to The Times writer Simon Wilde.
“Well, excuse us, Harry, if we beg to differ. The way in which you got out at the Gabba was the height of cricketing lunacy. As they say here in Australia’s Sunshine State, you looked a prawn short of a barbie,” Wilde wrote.
Stokes’ sledge of Brook comes just days after he called England “miserable”.
He has also become embroiled in a scandal over not wearing a helmet while on an e-scooter, which was followed by a terse exchange with a Courier-Mail reporter.
The incident also led to a front page in which Stokes was termed a “Pommy idiot”.
Cringe interview, Aussie anger over ‘dumb’ Test call
It was the selection shock that left a veteran “gutted”, commentators bemused and fans irate.
Nathan Lyon’s omission from the Aussie XI for the second Ashes Test at the Gabba sparked headlines; it’s not often the off-spinning GOAT is overlooked anywhere in the world, let alone at a track on which he has thrived.
It was the first time in nearly 14 years the 38-year-old had not featured in the Australia side at home, with commentators like Mark Taylor openly expressing their disapproval of the call.
Amid head scratching from fans, Lyon then featured in a cringey interview with host broadcaster Channel 7.
WATCH LYON’S CRINGE INTERVIEW ABOVE
“I found out when I came to the ground about 12.30pm,” he said when he found out he would be replaced by Michael Neser.
As for the chat with head selector George Bailey?
“Short. Absolutely filthy but can’t do anything about it,” he said abruptly.
“I just hope I can play my role and do whatever I can to get the boys ready.
“ … To be honest I haven’t sat down with Ronny (coach Andrew McDonald) or George yet to let things settle down in my own head.”
Lyon admitted “the communication is always there” when it comes to selections, but said he may not view all the action.
“I’m not a great watcher – I’m not sure how many balls I’ve watched,” he said during the night session of Day 1.
As for the next Test in Adelaide, Lyon said “I’d like to think so” when asked if he would return to the side.
“I’m not the first player to miss a Test match or the last, but I’m pretty gutted because I know the role I could play,” he said.

WHAT YOU SAID
Jason
Someone needs to drop George Bailey. Surely he has to go.
Peter
he’s atrocious. Poor old Webster saved us a few times and gets overlooked for a Second string wicket keeper
Richard
Dumb decision by George Bailey to axe Lyon, must play a specialist spinner
Chris
lyon shouldn’t question anyone. He gets told what to do. If he doesn’t like it go play somewhere else.
John
Bailey should go immediately. His judgment is completely flawed.
Don
Webster and Lyon have not really come out as “wokies” so that must be not helpful for them to get picked
David
Why have we got five quicks and no spinner!?
brendan
How can someone who was lucky to play test cricket think they know better than a 500 plus wicket taker
Brett
We will pay the price for leaving him out
Luke
Plenty of other Test players have been sat on the bench and returned for the next game of that is what the “team” requires. Nathan should stop sooking and get ready for when he’s back in the starting line up in Adelaide.
