It’s a debate as old as time in the film world - which movie was robbed of another instalment?

From 1980s classics to 2024 blockbusters, there are hundreds of films audiences are dying to see a sequel for.

While we might not be able to name them all, we’ve enlisted one of Brisbane’s resident film buff’s, Mike Gambaro, to give 25 films that need another instalment.

1. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

Picture it ... a washed up adult Ferris calling in sick for work or his son Ferris Jr takes his own day off.

Yes we may have gotten a prequel in Monsters University, but everyone wants to see what happened with Boo.

It’s one of the greatest Pixar movies of all time and Disney definitely believe in the IP as they currently make spin off shows and have announced a massive Monsters Inc land to be built at Disneyland.

Easily one of the best comedies of all time, but this could be either really, really good or really, really bad (Like Holmes & Watson).

4. The Princess Bride

Fred Savage should continue the story as he reads to his son like how his grandfather read the original story to him.

5. Beetlejuice

Recently with the release of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Tim Burton still knows what he’s doing and audiences still have an appetite for the franchise.

This Groundhog Day inspired flick is one of the best Sci-Fi movies in recent times and needs a continuation.

7. Hellboy: The Golden Army

Movie studios have tried twice now to reboot the Hellboy franchise but both times have struggled to capture the essence of what Guillermo Del Toro built with the original Hellboy films.

8. What We Do In The Shadows

According to Mr Gambaro this is Taika Waititi’s best movie.

The US spinoff series has done very well cementing itself as one of the best comedy shows recently, but I think we deserve to see some more adventures with the original movie cast.

9. Chef

Chef is a movie everyone should at least see once. It’s such a beautifully shot and written film that doesn’t get the love it deserves - a cracking sequel is just waiting to be made.

10. Sky High

The world built in Sky High set up so much potential to spawn a great franchise.

What if the kids we see in the original film are now the teachers at the school?

11. Coraline

Director Henry Seller has already said that there never will be a sequel but we can dream. Many questions need to be answered!

12. Tropic Thunder

Hollywood has changed a lot since the original was released - now imagine Robert Downey Jr returning for the role as a super politically correct actor.

13. Ted

After the recent success of the TV show prequel its universally agreed that everyone wants to see how Ted copes with being a Dad.

14. Zathura: A Space Adventure

This ‘Space Jumanji’ story had so much creativity behind it that it’s unfair we haven’t gotten more from the world Jon Favreau created.

15. Chicken Little

A sequel was deep in development before being scraped by Disney which means there’s a script somewhere out there!

Even if it’s just for streaming on Disney, they should at least give Chicken Little fans something.

What if Adam Sandler took the character to be even more washed up than he was where he’s still a wedding singer in 2024 doing 80s covers?

With Sandler now doing Happy Gilmore 2, why can’t we do the wedding Singer 2?

17. Barbie

Barbie but make it Ken.

OR an Allan spinoff ... give the people what they want!

18. Nightmare Before Christmas

When Jack Skellington stumbled across the door to Christmas Town, all everyone wanted to know was what was behind the other holiday doors!

The film is based on the first book in a three book series so there’s definitely more to explore and adapt - plus have you met someone who doesn’t like this movie?

Such a beloved Christmas classic that while it’s great as a stand alone, Jim Carrey has now expressed interest in making a sequel and it should be done.

If Carrey has some creative control it will no doubt be another festive hit.

22. School of Rock

It still baffles film buffs to this day that they haven’t done a sequel to School of Rock.

Would love this to be a Blues Brothers-esque ‘we’re getting the band back together’ adventure where we see where the kids are now as they prepare for their school reunion.

23. The Nice Guys

Russell Crowe is very vocal about how much hates doing sequels but he loved staring in The Nice Guys so much he’s said in multiple interviews that it’s the only sequel he actually wants to do.

Need I say less?

24. Who Framed Rodger Rabbit

The closest thing we got to this was Disney’s Chip and Dale: Rescue Rangers (Which has been deemed a spiritual successor to Rodger Rabbit) but that’s not enough!

Imagine Rodger going through a crisis while CGI takes over the animation industry.

25. The Truman Show
