A rising star Queensland MP was momentarily upstaged by her own son while the Prime Minister was giving her a job promotion, in a heartwarming moment too familiar to working parents.

Communications and Sport Minister Anika Wells, in a video posted to Instagram, hilariously shared the moment Anthony Albanese had to pause official proceedings at Government House after one of her twin sons kicked a footy into the room.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was reading out her name and title when one of Ms Wells’ twins Ossian and Dashiel - lurking with their sister Celeste and father Finn in the hallway just outside the room - accidentally punts a small footy through the doorway

“I will try that again. Get your brother to kick the ball that way,” Mr Albanese said, as the room erupted in laughter.

Governor-General Sam Mostyn then ushered the Wells’ family into the room so they could get a better view.

“Reckon you can hang there while we do this? It’s the best seat in the house,” Ms Mostyn said.

Ms Wells was sworn in as the Minister for Communications and Sport - a portfolio switch from her previous term when she held responsibility for Aged Care.

It means Ms Wells will now be responsible for steering the government’s long-promised crackdown on gambling advertising, as well as fulfilling a promise for all Australians to have mobile coverage wherever they can see the sky.

She is also in charge of implementing the news bargaining code—a deal which requires social media giants to fairly remunerate news businesses for its content but is in the sights of volatile US President Donald Trump.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has put Queensland Senator and close factional ally Murray Watt in-charge of the environment and water portfolios—a move seen as a strong signal of the government’s intent to fix outdated laws this term.

He now has the difficult task of delivering Labor’s promised nature positive laws, which were shelved by Mr Albanese mid-talks last term amid consternation from mining-heavy Western Australia.

It’s expected Senator Watts’ Queensland credentials—and previous experience handling the water and emergency management portfolios in Opposition—will put him in good stead with stakeholders.

Other Queenslanders sworn into Mr Albanese’s inner and outer minister were Treasurer Jim Chalmers and Assistant Ministers Nita Green and Anthony Chisholm.
