A surfer has been flown to hospital after a horror wipe-out at a popular surf break on the Queensland-NSW border.

The man, aged in his 30s, suffered suspected spinal injuries after he was speared into a shallow sandbank at Duranbah Beach at Point Danger around 9am.

He was helped from the water by fellow surfers and water police and treated at the scene by paramedics.

The Westpac rescue helicopter flew the man to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital. His condition was unknown.

Duranbah is a popular beach break between Coolangatta and Tweed Heads, renowned for its consistent and often powerful surf. A punchy 1.5m swell was hitting the break on Tuesday.
