A man who had been fatally stabbed screamed, “Help me, I’m gonna die,” as he left a trail of blood on the walls and elevator of an inner Brisbane apartment block in the early hours of Sunday.

Police believe the 39-year-old West End man had been involved in an argument before the stabbing at The Chelsea in Bowen Hills about 4.15am.

He sustained critical chest and back wounds and died in Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital.

Following a homicide investigation a 22-year-old Bowen Hills man was charged with murder on Sunday night.

Acting Detective Inspector Murray O’Connell said the victim was involved in an argument prior to his death, but how he came to suffer stab wounds was being investigated.

“The knife has been found. What we believe as the weapon used in this attack,” he said.

Residents of the Hamilton Place unit block were confronted with horrific scenes, including bloodstains in the hallway and elevator of the level-one unit.

Some residents were advised to stay indoors as police continued their investigations.

Act Insp O’Connell said the victim had attempted to leave the scene.

“It was a traumatic scene, there was some blood there as you would expect given the stab injuries,” he said.

He said it is believed the man may have been socialising prior to the argument but police were unsure as to where he had been before heading to the Bowen Hills apartment complex.

Resident Chloe said she woke up to police officers lined outside the building, where she later went downstairs and saw blood in the lift and hallway.

Another, Flynn, said he and his partner heard screaming and yelling at 4am and alerted police after hearing a man say, “Help me, I’m gonna die.”

“He was just like screaming and like wailing,” Mr Flynn said.

“I didn’t go out there, and then just called the cops, and then the cops got there.

“There is blood on our door. There is blood all over the walls, all over the carpet towards the elevator.”

A community Facebook post by one resident has alerted others to avoid the level due to the horrific sight.

Flynn said the apartment block was home to lots of families and he had never seen anything like the incident.

“There was a white towel or T-shirt completely soaked in blood,” he said.

The charged man will appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday.
