The 35-year-old was taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital, where he remains in a stable condition.

Nearby Resident Luke Randel said he was visiting a friend down the road for a barbecue when he heard two “big bangs”.

“I thought it was a car backfiring,” he said.

“And then about 10 minutes went by, and police came running through with their guns out.”

Mr Randel said he felt “pretty shook up” after the incident.

Forensics arrived at the scene in Bethania about 8.10am on Sunday.

The 62-year-old has been charged with one count each of attempted murder, acts intended to cause grievous bodily harm and fail to securely store weapon.

He will appear in the Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Monday.
