Australian Olympic swimmer Madison Wilson is encouraging people to get the Covid-19 vaccine despite the fully-vaccinated athlete being hospitalised with the virus.

The Queensland-born Olympic gold medallist took to social media to tell her fans that she had to pull out of the International Swimming League competition in Italy after contracting Covid-19.

But despite being hospitalised, Ms Wilson said the vaccine had worked.

“I want to continue to encourage people to get vaccinated, I did end up in hospital but that is as a precaution because I do have underlying chest and lung issues,” she said.

“It worked, it protected the people around me who I have been close to over this last period of time and I am so grateful for that because I would not want anyone else in this situation.”

Ms Wilson said she “truly believed” the vaccine had minimised her symptoms.

“I am so grateful for every single one of you reaching out and looking after me, the ISL and Swimming Australia have been incredible to me.”

Since competing in the Tokyo Olympics, Ms Wilson has spent six weeks in Italy and was set to compete in the competition as a part of the Los Angeles Current team.
