Birdsville’s Big Red Bash has made a big splash at the Queensland Tourism Awards.

The iconic festival – which is ironically taking a one-year hiatus next year - took out the category of best (regional) festival and event during the industry’s gala awards night at Star Brisbane on Friday.

Other big winners on the night included Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, which claimed a gold medal as best cultural tourism attraction and GC Aqua Park, which was named best major tourist attraction.

Brisbane Powerhouse’s gravity-defying restaurant Vertigo was named best new tourism business, while Rockhampton’s Beef Australia took out the best major festival award for events attracting more than 50,000 spectators.

The Big Red Bash, which has quickly become one of the country’s bucket list attractions, beat out another bush wonder, with the Outback Queensland Masters golf tour taking out silver.

It was a case of fourth time lucky for the outback music festival, after twice previously taking bronze and claiming silver in 2017.

The golf tour has also become a fan favourite for travellers, with the added incentive of a chance to win $1 million during a high-stakes hole-in-one challenge.

Currumbin Sanctuary’s win for best cultural attraction comes a year after it secured hall of fame status with a third consecutive best major tourist attraction award.

Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort took gold in the ecotourism category while the Whitsundays took home 16 medals, including gold for best caravan and holiday park for Big4 Adventure Whitsunday Resort for the third year in a row.
