Gold Coast man Tim Pitchford is set to live out a dream, having been hand-picked by Jared Leto to perform on stage with the rock star and his band, Thirty Seconds to Mars, at their upcoming Brisbane Riverstage concert on September 17.
Mr Pitchford’s journey to the stage started when Triple M Breakfast with Marto, Margaux, and Dan launched their “Hi Vis Voice” competition earlier this month, a contest aimed at finding Brisbane’s best workplace voice.
The competition caught the attention of Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman Jared Leto, who was so impressed with the concept that he added a new twist — The Kill cover contest.
“If somebody can sing The Kill and perform it well enough, I’ll bring them up on stage to sing it with me,” Leto announced on the Triple M show, setting off a flurry of submissions from hopefuls across the country.
Mr Pitchford, a session vocalist, entered the cover competition, recording his rendition of The Kill from his home studio on Mount Tamborine.
Leto announced him as the winner on Friday morning, praising Pitchford’s vocal similarity to his own.
“Tim, you did it. I couldn’t tell if it was me or you singing. You did a great job, and I can’t wait to have you on stage.”
Mr Pitchford shared his excitement on Triple M. “I just love singing. I’ll sing anything and everything, and when the challenge was put out there, I thought, ‘You know what? I’m gonna give this a crack’,” he said.
Despite not using a professional recording studio, Pitchford’s entry, recorded in his modest home studio, proved impressive enough to secure him the win.
“It’s nothing crazy, just my little studio up here on Tamborine Mountain, but here we are. I’m super stoked,” he said.
Taking to social media, Pitchford shared his excitement with his followers, writing on Instagram, “I FREAKING WON!!!! RIVERSTAGE HERE I COME!!!”.
He thanked Leto, Thirty Seconds to Mars, and Triple M Brisbane for the opportunity, adding, “I’m absolutely pinching myself. This is incredible!”
