Former Brisbane Bronco Anthony Milford is expected to fight a number of criminal charges arising from a Fortitude Valley altercation, his lawyer says.
The South Sydney-bound NRL player was arrested and charged with wilful damage and three counts of assault causing bodily harm during an incident late last month.
The Courier-Mail understands there is CCTV footage of the alleged incident which may assist in the football player’s legal defence of some of the charges.
Milford faced court on Wednesday morning for the first time since he was charged.
His defence lawyer Dave Garratt, who has represented a number of high-profile NRL players, asked for the case to be adjourned during the brief mention in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Wednesday morning.
Police have alleged Milford was embroiled in a verbal argument with his partner in the early hours of September 20 before three nearby witnesses became involved.
“Police were called to Marshall Street in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley shortly before 2am following reports of a disturbance,” a Queensland Police spokesperson said.
“A number of bystanders allegedly attempted to break up the altercation.
“In the course of events the 27-year-old man allegedly assaulted two other women and caused damage to a parked motor vehicle. Police will also allege the man assaulted a 19-year-old man before being apprehended.”
Outside court Mr Garratt flagged that Milford would likely fight a number of the charges in court.
“On the current charges before the court and from the evidence that I have seen so far my instructions are that he will be contesting some of the charges,” Mr Garratt said.
Milford was not required to speak during the mention of his charges before Magistrate Suzette Coates and the case was adjourned to November 29.
Milford has signed a one-year contract with the South Sydney Rabbitohs, who would be forced to bear the burden of any potential NRL suspension that may arise if the allegations are proven.
