Five to try: The best tasting schnitzels in Brisbane

The humble schnitzel or ‘schnitty’ has long been a pub favourite in Australia and Brisbane has some of the best you can find.

It’s a staple on the menu of every club and pub in Australia but just because it’s a standard pub item doesn’t mean it doesn't have to be good. Here’s where you can find the best schnitzels in Brisbane.

It wouldn’t be a list of Brisbane’s best schnitzels without first mentioning the Brisbane German Club. As the home of traditional German food, drink and culture in Brisbane, BGC is truly a must-try for authentic German pork schnitzels. While the menu does offer a chicken, veal and eggplant variant, and a parmy, the pork schnitzel here is the real hero, crisp and golden and served atop a bed of chosen sides and sauces, with my favourite the sour morello cherry port. Enjoy alongside a classic Weihenstephaner lager for the full German experience. Even better, on weekday lunches, diners can get a two-for-one schnitzel and wurst and on Tuesdays, the schnitties are $15.

You can’t go past The Bavarian in Chermside for a top notch German schnitzel, even if you do have to pay a bit more. For the true “big Bavarian”, the Schmankerl is the only option worth trying, with $41 of chicken schnitzel, crackling pork belly, frankfurter, kielbasa, cheese kransky, sauerkraut, red cabbage, mash, apple compote and bier jus. For those with smaller appetites, a standard schnitzel meal is worth every cent. Try the Yee-Haw with BBQ riblets and corn or the plant-based sun-dried tomato and balsamic-topped option. The venue also says no to boring side servings, offering more authentic options such as apple cabbage slaw and mash.

Home to southeast Queensland’s only House of Schnitzel restaurant, Capalaba Tavern is a mecca for adventurous schnitty lovers. Whether you feel like a good old chicken, “naked” grilled chicken, beef and plant-based schnitties, the tavern has you covered – and each dish can be served with one of 10 toppings that will have you feeling like you are chowing down on a pizza. From the most reliable (albeit boring) ham, cheese and napoli sauce parmigiana or a grilled cajun pineapple, bacon, smoky barbecue and mozzarella Malibu topping to the Rueben sandwich style combo of aioli, sauerkraut, pastrami and Swiss, the variety is almost endless.

Despite all the exciting culinary flavours and variations that so many venues opt for with their schnitzels, there is something so nostalgic and comforting about a top-quality, beautifully cooked, golden crunchy schnitzel, without the pretension. That is exactly what Streetcorner Jimmy aces. Described as their “old school big chicken schnitty”, this dish delivers exactly what it says on the tin, which is hardly unsurprising from a venue that exudes old world charm, from the location in the heritage woolstores to their homely menu. This well-portioned delight is served alongside a creamy apple slaw, beer battered fries and gravy.

A bit of a trek out of the city, The Dayboro Drop’s schnitzel options are well worth the drive, so much so their parmigiana was voted the best in Brisbane by The Courier-Mail. The Drop boasts four set schnitty choices, plus the rotating and evolving “parmy of the week”, where the kitchen team pushes the boundaries of what to expect atop a crumbed hunk of chicken. Previous specials have included the Mi Goreng, the Big Mac, and the Chicken Chow Mein. Aside from the classic schnitty and parmy, more adventurous tastes can try the Mexican-inspired Pablo Esco’parm, topped with tomato salsa, corn chips, guacamole, cheese and sour cream.
