TWO activists have been charged following today’s climate change protest in Wynnum.
Two New South Wales men aged 20 and 23 jumped in front of a coal train heading for the Port of Brisbane, climbed into a carriage and staged a sit-in for almost three hours before being arrested.
The men were charged with interfering with railway, trespass and obstructing a police officer.
They will front Cleveland Magistrates Court tomorrow.
The protest was livestreamed on the Extinction Rebllion Facebook page during which one of the protesters allegedly said “there is no time for climate change denial”.
“Communities are already facing the catastrophic effects of climate collapse,” he said.
“If we don’t take action now, all hopes of passing on a habitable home for future generations will be lost.
“I refuse to watch the world burn and sit idle as the government continues to stay silent.”
Extinction Rebellion SEQ is expecting thousands to rebel on the December 13 to shut down Brisbane’s Go Between Bridge, which the group says is the most expensive toll bridge per kilometre in the world.
They say “ecological collapse is unavoidable as long as business as usual continues- it’s time to shut it down again”.
Senior Sergeant Frank Lanaro said police were alerted of the incident at 9:40am.
“They flagged down the train and the train stopped safely,” he said.
“They then jumped on the first carriage.”
A young female connected to Extinction Rebellion was also detained by police and her belongings searched.
She was subsequently taken away in a police car.
