A couple claim a receipt from a fuel stop minutes before they copped a speeding fine is evidence they were not at fault.
The husband and wife were travelling in their Ford Ranger on the Warrego Hwy when they were stung by a mobile speed camera doing 151km/h in an 80 zone.
Taking to Reddit to seek advice, the wife who was the passenger in the car was adamant her husband was not speeding.
“I am a law-abiding citizen who has never received a speeding fine in my whole 12 year driving life,” she said.
“I can, hand on my heart, swear there is not a chance he was doing that sort of speed in his car and especially not while I was riding passenger.
“I scold him for being even 5km over the speed limit.”
The woman went on to claim that a receipt from a service station they stopped at 10 minutes before being caught could prove they were not speeding.
“The only evidence we have that he was not speeding was that we stopped for fuel 10 minutes before the fine was captured and have a transaction record from this purchase with a time on it,” she said.
“We have looked at the maps and it says it would take us eight minutes to get from where we stopped for fuel to where the speed camera is, indicating that there is no chance that we were speeding across that section of road immediately prior to the camera.”
The woman went on to Reddit to ask whether they stood a chance of getting the fine overturned, adding they had started the process to dispute the fine.
She described the whole situation as “terrifying” which had left her feeling like an “absolute wreck”.
“I’m at a huge loss, both of us have the points available in order to take the fine but we have read up that a speeding fine exceeding the limit by such a large margin could be loss of licence and even having our car crushed,” she said.
“I’m terrified that this could mean that if we just copped the fine, even though I find it incredibly difficult to believe we were truly doing that kind of speed, they will stop by and issue us with the further punishments.
“Which would mean the loss of an $85k car and a loss of licence, which would also mean my husband would lose his job.”
Reddit users were quick to offer their support and advice, though many were doubtful she could overturn the fine.
“150km an hour is insanely fast for any road, you’d know if you were going that fast, sounds like a faulty reading to me,” one person wrote.
“This isn’t a situation you want to represent yourselves in. Definitely need legal advice and also get the cops to access the traffic cameras / other fines with the day,” another added.
“Can a ford ranger even go 151/h without falling apart?”
