Cameras are rolling on the Netflix adaptation of best-selling novel Boy Swallows Universe with filming underway in Queensland.
Production began on the Netflix series on Monday, with a set spotted at Beenleigh where roads were closed for filming near the local aquatic centre.
Era specific cars from the 1970s and 1980s, which have been sourced locally in recent weeks, lined the streets as young actors dressed in school uniforms filmed a scene at a local home.
The anticipated eight-part series, from a high-profile team of executive producers including Joel Edgerton, will be filmed across Brisbane and southeast Queensland, where the best-selling Trent Dalton story is set, for the next five months.
Supported by the Queensland Government via Screen Queensland’s Production Attraction Strategy, the production is expected to inject $33 million into the Queensland economy, creating around 185 jobs for cast and crew and 2500 extras.
Inspired by Dalton’s own upbringing in the city’s southern suburbs, Boy Swallows Universe is a coming-of-age story set in the 1980s about working-class Brisbane teenager and budding reporter Eli Bell, who is entangled in a world of drug crime.
Netflix is expected to announce the cast of the series soon.
