Ten public secondary schools rank alongside elite private colleges on a list of Brisbane’s top 50 performers for ATAR results, an independent analysis reveals.

Art of Smart has crunched the numbers of Brisbane high schools based on Australian Tertiary Admission Rank results from 2022.

It comes as tens of thousands of Year 12 students today sit the first papers of a three-week exam block with the results to form part of this year’s ATAR results.

Art of Smart is a platform that enables students be it from tutoring to workshops and help them navigate their pathways after school.

Under the current ATAR system, the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority does not make the data accessible unlike its previous OP system.

Art of Smart chief executive Rowan Kunz said moving away from the published OP system could make it hard for families to decide where to send their children.

Mr Kunz said the rankings would help parents make an informed decision and not have them relying on data that’s not always published accurately.

“It can be hard as parents, you get these glossy brochures but it can be hard to compare apples to apples,” Mr Kunz said.

“So hopefully this gives them a way to calculate what’s important to them.

“Through this ranking, we’d like to help parents make the right choice with where their dollars are invested for their child’s education by building transparency.”

Mr Kunz said schools must publicly publish data on their ATAR results to be eligible for the list.

Unlike other states which release a list per school, Queensland only releases a median breakdown of the cohort.

Education Minister Grace Grace has previously said the ATAR system was not designed or intended to measure school performance and that “league table” were “counter-productive”.

Mr Kunz said the Art of Smart rankings were calculated using aggregated data provided by schools on their results to identify a novel way of ranking schools on academic performance.

The company gathered publicly released data for each school and averaged the data on the percentage of students who achieved above 80, 90, 95 and 99 ATAR results.

Those percentages are then averaged into a single score.

Brisbane Grammar School was ranked the top school in the state closely followed by Brisbane Girls Grammar School and St Aidan’s Anglican Girls’ School.

Brisbane State High School and Mansfield State High School made it into the top 10, beating the likes of Somerville House, Stuartholme School and Cannon Hill Anglican College.

Eight other public schools in The Gap, Corinda, Kenmore, Stretton, Indooroopilly, Balmoral, Mount Gravatt and MacGregor came in the top 50.

Some of the schools with low fees and high academic output identified by the Art of Smart included Redlands College, Mount Alvernia College and Genesis Christian College.
