Olympic Education Commission chair Mikaela Cojuangco Jaworski has been appointed as the Brisbane 2032 Co-ordination Commission chair, succeeding Kirsty Coventry after she was voted IOC president.

The former Filipino equestrian athlete and actress has been an International Olympic Committee board member for five years and a member of the commission since Brisbane was awarded the Games four years ago.

She was trained in Australia by three-time Olympian Vicki Roycroft for more than 20 years, earning herself a gold medal in the 2002 Asian Games and multiple Southeast Asian Games awards over 10 years.

The former national athlete will chair the Brisbane meeting on May 20.

Brisbane Olympic boss Andrew Liveris welcomed the opportunity to work with her closely as the attention switched from strategy to planning of the games.

“Mikaela has a deep understanding and history of time in Australia and among Australians and has been a positive and supportive voice as part of Brisbane 2032’s co-ordination commission since its formation,” he said.

The Brisbane Olympic Games will take place between July 23 and August 8 in 2023, with the Paralympic Games following between August 24 and September 5.
