Brisbane radio personality Matty Acton has revealed live on air that he has become a grandparent at 37 and is now asking listeners to call him “granddaddy”.

In an exciting new chapter of his life, B105 radio host Matty Acton has officially become a grandfather at the age of 37.

Acton’s stepson Ethan, 23, and his wife Maddy welcomed their first child, a baby girl named Illyria Fay Acton, on Monday night, a few days ahead of her expected October 5 due date.

The Brisbane radio personality shared the joyful news with his co-hosts Stav Davidson and Abby Coleman on B105’s breakfast show on Tuesday morning, even before he had the chance to meet his granddaughter in person.

“Everyone is happy, healthy, and doing well,” Acton told listeners.

He later revealed Illyria Fay was born weighing a healthy 4.3kg at the Mater Mothers Hospital.

Reflecting on the experience during Wednesday’s show, Acton opened up about the surreal moment of meeting his granddaughter for the first time.

“It was one of the most amazing experiences of my life,” he said.

“The last time we were here, we were leaving with Eden, that was the last time we were at the Mater,” Acton recalled, referring to his youngest daughter, born in 2017.

Matty met his wife Esther when he was just 18, during his first radio gig in Toowoomba, and has raised Ethan as his own since he was three years old.

Along with Ethan, the couple share two younger children — Xander, 10, and Eden, 7 — who are already excited to embrace their roles as ‘Yuncle’ and ‘Yaunty,’ short for ‘young uncle’ and ‘young aunty.’

As for his new title, Acton affectionately asked listeners to call him “granddaddy“.

“If everyone call now affectionally call me granddaddy it would be greatly appreciated” he said.

Acton’s wife Esther, 40, also weighed in on her new grandmother role, sharing how she tried to stay composed for her son during the emotional moment.

“Like that was the probably why I didn’t cry, because I was like, ‘I’ve got to hold myself together for Ethan and for Maddie’,” she said, joking that Ethan looked like he’d “been hit by a truck.”

After weeks of debating her grandparent name, Esther has settled on ‘Grandma Essie’ to match Matty’s chosen title.

In a fun twist, to celebrate his new-found granddad status, Acton is set to participate in the upcoming B105’s Grandparent Grand Prix at the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500.

The event will see grandparents across South East Queensland racing on mobility scooters along the GC500 track.
